I deleted the final paragraph. The story became quieter, and unfortunately, better.

The bakery downstairs saved the crooked roll for me. Apparently consistency has rewards.

After the rain, Koenji smelled like wet concrete and grilled soy sauce. Not elegant. Entirely convincing.
